The detailed plan implemented and automated in IPAM software
IPv6 address planning is one of the first steps in an organization's IPv6 journey. Most enterprise organizations approach an IPv6 initiative with similar phases. Hogg Networking recommends the following enterprise adoption migration strategy. There are three key IPv6 address planning activities along the planning and deployment process.
The process
Hogg Networking had developed a recommended "IPv6 Address Planning Process for Enterprises". The process begins by training the IT teams on IPv6 addressing concepts and address planning best practices. This training will make all subsequent conversations about the IPv6 address plan that much more productive. The next step is to determine the organization's long-term IPv6 address requirements and submit an address allocation request to one or more Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). The next step involves documenting the high-level addressing plan and the details for the operational use of addresses across the entire enterprise organization. The final steps are to fully develop the detailed addressing plan and implement this into an IP Address Management (IPAM) software system.

Why an expert
Hogg Networking's expert IPv6 advice can improve the accuracy of the address planning process minimizing iterations and revisions of the plan. Leveraging our experience leveraging the IPv6 addressing best practices can reduce the time it takes to create a "best fit" plan. If this is your first time deploying IPv6, then it pays dividends to have an expert by your side to guide you to do this correctly right from the start, thus saving time and money and mitigate risks of mistakes. Organizations attempt to create their own address plan and often recognize a mistake after a partial IPv6 deployment that requires re-addressing. We want to help avoid making any mistakes on this critical step in the IPv6 deployment phases.
Services
Technical training classes covering IPv6 address formats, types, address planning practices, address planning examples, and IPAM demonstrations
Review an organization's own initial IPv6 address plan, review any current allocation and provide guidance on the foundational concepts for the detailed IPv6 address plan
Focusing on the enterprise's business and operational practices, determine the amount of global unicast IPv6 addresses required for the current and long-term network of environments
Draft requests to one or more Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) to apply for a global IPv6 address allocation
Document the detailed IPv6 address plan, the operational model, practices of address assignment and procedures of handling and using IPv6 addresses in the enterprise networked environments
Assist with the evaluation of IPAM vendors and/or open-source software to determine the best approach, evaluation, assessment, ranking, and document the recommended IPAM software
Configuration of the IPAM software for IPv6 addressing and allocation to network resources
Development of software automation methods to operationalize the assignment of IPv6 addresses to physical and virtual networks
